Ruairi L Rodgers is a native of Tory Island. He has lived all his life on Tory Island. While Ruairi had always been interested in art it was purely for his own enjoyment, but following a visit to his home by the late Derek Hill he began to take painting a little more seriously. In 1977 a second visit from Derek Hill convinced Ruairi that he should allow his work to be seen publicly. With no formal training his inspiration was the paintings of the earlier generations of Tory artists, his sources, his island home and the sea around it. Ruairi’s paintings are notable for their inventiveness and their detail. Over the years Ruairi has exhibited all over Ireland, Paris, New York, Edingburgh and Manchester.
